Kettlebell Turkish Get-up

Move from lying to standing and back to lying with the bell above the shoulder. Pause at each stage. One complete floor-to-stand-to-floor sequence counts as one repetition on that side.

Get ready

  1. Clear enough floor space for the whole body, a leg sweep and a lunge, plus overhead clearance. Rehearse the full sequence without the bell before loading it.
  2. Sit beside the bell, then lie on the bell side with knees bent. Grip the handle with the working hand and cover that hand with the other hand. Hold the bell close to your chest and roll onto your back with both hands securing it; never drag it over your face.
  3. Using both hands, press the bell above the working shoulder. Keep that arm straight, wrist straight and shoulder supported. Bend the same-side knee with its foot flat; extend the other leg diagonally and place the free arm diagonally on the floor. Remove the assisting hand only when steady.

How to do it

  1. Look at the bell. Push through the bent-leg foot and roll toward the opposite elbow, keeping the bell above the shoulder; do not perform a straight sit-up. Pause with the supporting forearm planted.
  2. Push from the supporting elbow onto that hand and sit tall. Keep the loaded arm straight and the planted foot steady.
  3. Press through the planted foot and supporting hand to lift the hips just enough to bend and sweep the straight leg underneath you. Place its knee under the hip, with that shin angled sideways; keep the supporting hand planted.
  4. Keep the bell above the shoulder, hinge over the kneeling hip, then lift your supporting hand and bring the torso upright. Turn the rear lower leg into a normal half-kneeling lunge with rear toes tucked; align the front foot and rear knee on separate tracks.
  5. Once upright and stable, look forward. Push through the front foot and rear toes to stand, then bring feet level. Keep the bell overhead, wrist straight and ribs over pelvis.
  6. Reverse carefully: step the non-bell-side leg back, lower that knee gently, and settle in half kneeling. Look at the bell again. Turn the rear lower leg sideways to reopen the hip, hinge and plant your free hand on the floor beside the kneeling side.
  7. Support on the hand and front foot, lift the knee and sweep that leg forward. Sit down under control, then extend that leg. Lower onto the supporting elbow and roll slowly onto your back, keeping the bell above the shoulder until you are lying steadily.

Finish the movement

  1. With both hands, lower the bell close to your chest, roll onto the bell side and place it on the floor. Release only after it is stable. Sit up without holding the bell and reset on the other side.

Make it easier

  • Perform the complete sequence without a bell, or practice floor-to-elbow-to-floor without a bell. Keep both hands on the bell for setup and exit.

Make it harder

  • Pause longer at each stable position without increasing the load or rushing transitions.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the loaded elbow, looking away during floor transitions, lifting the bent-leg heel, skipping the rear-leg adjustment or rushing the return.

When to stop or adjust

  • Do not continue if the bell drifts toward your head, the loaded arm buckles, a hand or foot slips, or you lose the sequence. Return by the last controlled steps and secure the bell with both hands before lowering it; do not try to catch a falling bell.
  • End the set if grip slips, control or balance is lost, or pain, numbness or dizziness appears. Set the bell down under control before resting.
